RETAILERS in Malton have hailed a shopping trail aimed at rewarding Christmas shoppers a success.

Local businesses came together to create Maltonopoly, a Monopoly board-style map of shops in which opened on Sundays in December.

Shoppers spending £20 in five of the shops were entered into a draw for a hamper worth £1,000 comprising prizes from all participating businesses.

The draw took place on Twelfth Night and the lucky winner was Kerry Megginson, from Norton.

Rob Wormall, from the Talbot Hotel, who came up with the idea, said: “It was great to see so many businesses get behind the idea and it proved very popular with a lot of shoppers.

“I am confident that it can be built on for next year and can be an even bigger success with more traders getting involved to help Malton become a great venue for Christmas shopping.”

Congratulations to all concerned. Now can we have the "Maltonopoly" signs, that are currently littering the approaches to Malton, removed. Their outdated presence gives the impression of a lack of care of the town or incompetance. Which is a shame given the efforts that lead to the promotion in the first place.
