PICKERING’S newest centenarian, Elsie Cosens, had a double celebration to mark her milestone birthday last Wednesday.

She had a party provided by Pickering Luncheon Club with a large number of friends, then the following day, her actual birthday, her family held another.

Mrs Cosens, of Ashfield Road, Pickering, was born at Whiteman’s Green, Sussex. She moved to Yorkshire 13 years ago with her husband, Ted, who died in 2004, after the couple had been married for more than 70 years.

Mrs Cosens had a luncheon party with her sons, Gerald and Ronnie, grandaughter Lucy, and other members of the famiy.

Ron said: “As well as a birthday card from the Queen, she received lots of other cards, several bouquets, gifts and chocolates.”

Mrs Cosens has 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and a great, great-grandchild.

One of the highlights of her celebrations was to Skype her eldest son, Alan.
