A LOCAL charity committee has raised more than £260,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care since it was established just over a decade ago.

Kirkbymoorside Fundraising Group was set up in 1999 when a small number of people in the area decided to get together to raise funds for the charity.

Chairman June Cook said that over the years the number of members had grown while the majority of the original team remained working together as a great team of friends.

“We have held many and varied events from coffee mornings to sponsored walks, fashion shows, cookery demonstrations, floral demonstrations, tractor runs and street collections,” she said.

“We have received many donations from very generous people and our loyal supporters are always there at the events.”

Fundraising plans for the coming year included a Daffodil Walk in Farndale in March and the annual coffee morning at Ryedale Garages.

Mrs Cook said the aim of the charity was to provide home nursing for people with terminal illnesses in the community, which comes free to the patient, and enables them to remain at home surrounded by family and friends in familiar surroundings.

“It is so humbling and gratifying to receive such support which enables the nursing services to continue and I feel to raise more than a quarter of a million pounds is no mean feat in an area with a small population,” she said.

“All the money raised locally is used locally to continue this amazing nursing service.

“Thank you one and all, between us we have banked £261,610 over the past 13 years.”
