THE historic rural tradition of hedge-laying was revived as part of a conservation scheme at Leavening Brow on the Yorkshire Wolds.

Teams of residents joined Ryedale District Council’s countryside officer, Don Davies to work on the project which includes planting wild flowers, building fencing and installing an interpretation board.

The project, which will also see the creation of a picnic area, was instigated by Leavening residents.

Mr Davies said: “Local volunteers turned out after a leaflet drop was made to every household in the village. Fortified by a supply of cakes, provided by those who couldn’t help on the day, everyone had a very rewarding time and learned a new skill, all aimed at improving this unique site.”
