PARENTS of talented young musicians face having to raise £1,000 to transport them to one of the country’s leading music centres.

Each Saturday the youngsters are picked up by bus from Malton, Thornton-le-Dale and Pickering to enable them to join others in the 11 orchestras and bands at the Scarborough Area Music Centre at the resort’s sixth form college.

Lyn Mansfield, of the Ryedale parents support group, said that while fundraising events are held, together with concerts given by the bands and parents’ funding, the bus still has a deficit of £1,000 for each term.

“Fortunately, we have had help from the Ryedale Area Committee and the North Yorkshire Rewards Fund, but we do need more youngsters to use the bus and to boost our finances,” said Lyn.

“We are trying to make the bus cost effective and keeping it running is of benefit to all students by strengthening numbers for all music centre ensembles.”

She added that the youngsters themselves had been raising money through supermarket bag packing and parents also help by organising events.

Anyone able to help is asked to phone Lyn on 01751 475442 or the music centre on 01723 354042
