Work needed on unstable memorials in Helmsley churchyard

TONS of soil are to be put into the old part of the churchyard at All Saints in Helmsley to stabilise gravestones.

Town councillors heard from town clerk, Dinah Farley, that the ground around some of the memorials was collapsing which could result in some gravestones toppling over.

Experts who had surveyed the churchyard said that putting top soil into the area would resolve the situation.

Coun Ken Claridge said: “There was a risk that graves could have collapsed if we had not taken action.”

Coun Martin Vander Weyer, chairman of the council, said putting in the soil would enable the “caved in” areas of the churchyard to be restored.

The council agreed to seek quotations for the work from contractors.
