OLDER people do unpaid work worth £2.3billion in Yorkshire and the Humber, according to the 2012 Retirement Nation report by MGM Advantage.
The report found that people approaching and in retirement in Yorkshire and the Humber gave society an average of 84 hours a year in charitable work at a value of £541 million and 98 hours of voluntary community work worth £632 million.
They also provide 285 hours in free care for grandchildren, parents and other family members, saving the family economy £1.1 billion in the last year.
Yet the majority felt undervalued by society.
Sixty per cent felt they were treated badly by politicians and 42 per cent felt that society treated them badly, while 27 per cent thought they were poorly portrayed by the media.
