A NORTON College student had been awarded the prestigious Lord Lieutenant’s certificate – an honour equivalent to an MBE for young people.

Jacob Porter was chosen for the award for his outstanding hard work, service, commitment and achievements to the Army Cadet Force, taking on his role from his older brother Ben, which in itself is unprecedented.

The 17-year-old joined the ACF in 2008 and has gained the rank of Colour Sergeant and four star cadet. Among his achievements he has gained First Aid, Senior Cadet Instructor Course, BTEC Diploma Level 2 in Public Services, Silver Duke of Edinburgh and is due to represent the county in a shooting competition next month.

He has also represented his county in the North East for tug-of-war and athletics.

Jacob will now accompany the Lord Lieutenant, Lord Crathorne to a number of special occasions, including the annual legal service and the Remembrance Service, throughout next year.

The award was presented during a ceremony at Queen Elizabeth Barracks, Strensall, where Jacob spoke about his Army Cadet life and his future aspirations. He also talked about how pleased he was to receive the award.

Jacob said: “I am so honoured to have received this award and look forward to assisting Lord Crathorne at future events. I would like to thank everybody in the Army Cadet Force, for all the support they have given me throughout the past four years.”
