School pupils learn about Yorkshire vet James Herriot

SCHOOL pupils from London discovered the real life scenery and inspirations behind the work of North Yorkshire vet James Herriot as part of a campaign by Grand Central to promote the value of reading to young people.

The York-based train operator teamed up with World of James Herriot in Thirsk as part of the Get London Reading initiative, which aimed to reduce the number of children in London who leave primary school unable to read properly and improve literacy.

Pupils from St Mary’s RC Primary School, in Battersea, boarded a Grand Central train direct from King’s Cross to Thirsk and studied copies of All Creatures Great and Small during the journey, which were then brought to life at the museum.
