Tom Mellor receives his Bottled Gold Beers award at the SIBA North Region awards
GLASSES have been raised at a rural Yorkshire brewery after it scooped a trio of medals at a prestigious brewing awards event.
The Hunmanby-based Wold Top Brewery won a gold medal for its Wold Gold in the Bottled Gold Beers category Its winter beer, Shepherd’s Watch, scooped a gold in the Bottled Beers category and a silver in the overall Bottled Champion group.
The recognition came at the recent North Region Beer Competition in Manchester, an event organised by the Society of Independent Breweries (SIBA) Brewery owner Tom Mellor said he was delighted with Wold Top’s haul of medals at the event.
He said: “It’s a great accolade to have a professional seal of approval on these beers.
‘‘The competition was tough, as the Northern SIBA region is the biggest in the country, with 122 beers being considered by 138 judges.
‘‘We’re delighted, too, that as Gold Medal winners, both Wold Gold and Shepherd’s Watch will go through to the SIBA National Beer Competition that takes place at BeerX in March 2013.”
The triumph for the micro brewery is the latest in a line of successes since it began producing ales in a shed in 2003. Wold Top’s first taste of success came in January the following year when its Falling Stone ale won silver in the Best Bitter category at the SIBA North Festival in Southport. Earlier this year, the brewery’s products were chosen to supply the restaurant at the Royal Academy during its recent David Hockney exhibition. The two most recent winning beers are available in supermarkets and from the brewery’s website at woldtopbrewery.co.uk
