Bonfire Night to raise funds for Helmsley sports club refurbishment

HELMSLEY’S Bonfire Night celebrations will be held at the recreation ground on Saturday with funds raised going towards the planned refurbishment of the site.

It was announced early this month that a long-awaited scheme to upgrade the community and sports club was underway after a commitment from Ryedale District Council to match-fund £150,000 over three years for improvements to the site.

A committee, made up of sports club representatives and fundraisers, has been established with responsibility for ongoing operations and investment in the site.

John Higgs, chairman of the operating committee, said their aim was to raise a matching £150,000 through the local community, private donations and grant applications.

He said: “This will enable the necessary investment to improve car parking facilities, the children’s play area, lighting, drainage, signage and complete a much needed overhaul of the existing pavilion to include new toilet facilities, improved community rooms, kitchen and bar facilities.

“The committee is keen to encourage the wider use of the facility for events or more regular uses including weekly playgroups, dance or exercise classes and would welcome approaches from any members of the local community.”

Groups which currently use the facility, including bowls, cricket, football, snooker, billiards and tennis clubs, are always keen to encourage new members.

The bonfire night starts at 6pm with bonfire lighting at 6.45pm and fireworks from 7pm. Soup and hotdogs will be available.
