Parishes to merge under new vicar

THE parishes of St Mary’s Priory, Old Malton, and St Michael’s Malton, are to be merged into a united benefice.

The Rev Dr Peter Bowes, priest at St Michael’s, said that at the request of the Bishop of Selby, he was now “guiding” both parishes towards developing and formalising the arrangements.

He said: “The intention, endorsed by the parochial church councils of both parishes, and presently going through formal processes of approval with the diocese and the church commissioners, is that St Michael’s and St Mary’s will, in about a year’s time, share a vicar.”

He added that Dr Quentin Wilson, previous incumbent at St Mary’s, had introduced some sharing of ministry before he retired.

Each parish will retain its separate identity and tradition, together with their church councils and responsibility for their own finances, Mr Bowes said, adding: “These arrangements will not change the Sunday worship pattern of either church,” he added.

The benefice will have a new vicar.
