Norton Community Primary School pupils bury time capsule to celebrate centenary

CHILDREN in the future will have the chance to find out more about life in 2012 thanks to a specially-created time capsule.

Norton Community Primary School has put together the capsule as part of a series of events to mark its centenary year.

The idea evolved from a Year 1 lesson which compared life at the school 100 years ago to how it is today.

Teacher Jane Everitt said: “Each class was asked to think about what they would like people to know about Norton Primary in another 100 years.

“Contributions varied from small models to photographs of the Olympic Torch visiting Pickering this summer.

“There is also a photograph of the whole school, taken on a sunny summer’s day out on the field.”

Mrs Everitt said one very poignant inclusion was Ben’s Book.

She said: “Earlier this year the whole school was devastated by the sudden death of one of our pupils and his class poured their thoughts into a memory book.”

Each pupil at the school played a part in burying the time capsule by covering it with a handful of soil.

Mrs Everitt said: “It is wonderful to think that in another 100 years’ time, people living in Norton could be re-discovering the pleasure of learning and working at Norton Community Primary School.”
