Walker trapped on Scarborough beach for 17 hours
10:10am Wednesday 31st October 2012 in News
A WALKER spent the night trapped on the beach at Scarborough after his leg got caught in sea defences.
The man, believed to be a 51-year-old local resident, spent 17 hours in the open unable to move until land and sea emergency services combined to rescue him.
He was taken to hospital by ambulance with leg injuries that were not believed to be serious.
The emergency began at 7pm on Monday when the man was out walking above the tideline on South Bay about half-a-mile from The Spa and missed his footing in the dark.
He was not reported missing until the following morning.
Shortly before 10am yesterday he was spotted by other walkers who alerted the emergency services.
Two fire crews from Scarborough with an aerial ladder and coastguards worked together to free him and lift him to safety.
