PICKERING is to have a jazz festival after all next year.
This year’s annual event was due to be the last, but now members of Ryedale Jazz Club have decided to go ahead and stage a mini-festival, over the Friday and Saturday, July 26 and 27.
The group announced its decision and Wilson Hepplestone, spokesman and one of the organisers, said: “We have had a very encouraging response and some people have already bought tickets.”
Two bands have already been booked – Ron Burnett’s Mardi Gras, a York jazz band, and Ryedale Jazz, a local group with a growing reputation among jazz fans.
“All pointers so far for the 2013 mini-festival have been couraging enough for us to begin making plans for a full week in 2014,” said Mr Hepplestone.
The club has recently hosted several successful events featuring musicians from Ryedale and beyond. Club meetings are to be held on November 14 and December 12, with dates now announced for next year, starting on January 9.
Meanwhile, said Mr Hepplestone, moves are being made by musician John Welford of Swinton Brass Band to set up jazz taster sessions in Malton or Norton.
Further information on performances are available from Mr Hepplestone on 01723 859733.
