Former college site in Pickering to be used for housing

THE go-ahead has been given for the demolition of a former agricultural education centre so that 13 houses can be built.

The buildings have lain dormant for several years after Askham Bryan College closed its premises in Swainsea Lane, Pickering.

A report to Ryedale District Council’s planning committee pointed out there had been a number of objections from nearby residents who were concerned the existing drainage system would be inadequate and lead to flooding while the loss of a hedgerow and trees would affect residential amenities and ecology.

Pickering Town Council had raised no objections although members had expressed concern about the initial housing mix which had now been amended.

The committee backed the officers’ recommendation to approve the plan submitted by Yorvik Homes Ltd.
