Go-ahead for new front of Medd’s fruit and vegetable shop in Norton

PERMISSION has been given for the front of a greengrocer’s in Norton to be changed, despite objections from Norton Town Council.

The new owners of Medd’s fruit and vegetable business in Commercial Street want to alter the existing front so that the new design will allow for the creation of a new entrance door to the first floor flat.

Town councillors had objected, saying the front should remain double-fronted because it was in a conservation area and stairs to the upper level via the front of the shop would put the shop’s viability for the future in question.

But a report from planning officials to Ryedale District Council’s planning committee, which met last week, said revised plans had been drawn up after the objections were raised.

The alterations were needed to make letting the first-floor flat feasible as the current stairway was accessed through the shop floor.

The committee voted unanimously to approve the plan.

yet another shop in norton that will end up as flats/housing? it used to be quite a nice parade of shops, but i doubt it will be long before it ends up like the butchers just a few doors up, the newsagents, etc. at least there is still an open-all-hours off licence to get ones grog

as the daughter of the new owner of the business i can correct The Gazette And Herald on the fact it is not us changing the shop front. It will lose us light to the shop and also viewing for customers passing by, unfortunatly this is not our building so out of our hands.
