Deacons to be ordained in Minster

THE Archbishop of York will tomorrow ordain 10 deacons for the diocese of York into the priesthood.

Dr John Sentamu will preside over the ceremony at York Minster from 10am.

The 11 candidates were ordained as deacons by the archbishop a year ago, and have since then been serving as curates (assistant ministers) in parishes across the York diocese, which includes 602 local churches between the Humber and the Tees and from the A1 eastwards to the Yorkshire coast.

As priests they will be able to administer all the church's sacraments as well as continuing to lead worship and carry out pastoral work in the parishes where their in-service training continues.

Recent tradition in the diocese of York (since 1995) has seen all deacons ordained by the archbishop in York Minster at the end of June or early July, but the candidates have been ordained as priests a year later in the parish where they have served, usually by one of the suffragan (or assistant) bishops of Hull, Whitby or Selby.

The candidates are as follows, shown with the parishes in which they will continue to serve as priests: Rev Anna Burr (Fulford, York); Rev Mike Cadwallader (Hull St Aidans); Rev Phil Carman (Acomb St Stephen, York); Rev Gail Dalley (Pocklington group); Rev Jon Dean (Great Ayton); Rev Stephen Drury (Seamer, Scarborough); Rev Josephine Evetts-Secker (Hinderwell group); Rev Ben Norton (Emmanuel, Bridlington); Rev Joanna Parker (Pocklington group) and Rev Steve Wilcox (Kirk Ella & Willerby, Hull).

The new deacons will be ordained in York Minster on Sunday, June 29.
