COUNCILLORS have backed new moves to reduce heavy traffic congestion in Malton and Norton town centres by agreeing to explore new ways of funding multi-million pound improvements at the Malton bypass on the busy A64 Scarborough to York road.

Ryedale District Council is to explore ways of initiating a multi-partnership scheme with the Highways Agency, North Yorkshire County Council, Yorkshire Forward - and by using some of its own capital reserves and through commuted sums from developers, to fund the scheme.

Several councillors said the imp0rovements - possibly in the form of roundabouts - at Brambling Fields, Norton, and Musley Bank, Malton, were vital to improve the quality of life in the towns, to help to create new jobs and to attract more shoppers and visitors.
