Residents win bus shelter fight

RESIDENTS of Old Malton have won their fight for a new bus shelter to protect them from wet weather when travelling to Malton.

While a new shelter was provided in the heart of the village some time ago for passengers alighting on their journey from Malton, those heading for the town had to use an age-old shelter, stepped back from the road, and they had to walk over a disused weighbridge to catch the bus.

Now Malton Town Council has been told that funding has been given to provide Old Malton with a cedar-boarded shelter, with roof shingles and a redwood frame, at a cost of £5,200.

The scheme has now been put to North Yorkshire County Council's passenger transport authority for approval and funding.

However, Malcolm Horsley, who has been leading the long-running campaign for a shelter said he believed it would only be "tarting up" the existing shelter at the old weighbridge.

"A new shelter will not make the bus stop easier to use because people cannot see the bus coming and it was set well back from the roadside."
