Pikes are forced to settle for third

THE Pikes finished their season in third place in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division.

Last Tuesday they completed their league programme with a 1-0 home defeat to Parkgate. The best chance of the first half fell to the Pikes after 21 minutes when Steve Baxter crossed from the right wing for Ricky Greening to shoot over the crossbar from six yards.

Parkgate scored the only goal of the game in stoppage time at the end of the first half when skipper Richard Patterson netted from close range after a 20 yard free kick which was taken by Adam Fretwell.

The Pikes had Danny Brunton as their man of the match and substitute Chris Batchelor was cautioned four minutes from the end of the game. The crowd was 135.

The Pike's team was as follows: Martin, MacAuley (Williamson 62), Brunton, Eeles (Harrison 77), McNaughton, Dutton, Baxter, Aziz, Whitfield (Batchelor 66), Greening and Rose.

Winterton Rangers have been crowned league champions with 91 points and second place went to Glapwell with 78 points. They have been assured that they will be promoted into the UniBond League First Division South for next season.

The Pikes were third, five points behind Glapwell and fourth were Liversedge, five points behind the Pikes. Selby Town finished seventh.

The Pikes Under-19s beat Hall Road Rangers 2-1 last Thursday at home thanks to a brace of Chris Wrigley goals. The Pikes still have to play away at Harrogate Railway on a date to be arranged before they finish their season.

The Pikes are holding their awards presentation night for the first team and under -19 team on Friday at the Station Hotel, Pickering, meet at 7pm for 7.30pm. There will be a buffet provided. All supporters and sponsors are welcome to attend.

On Sunday, June 22 the Pikes will be holding their annual sponsored walk, which is a major fundraising event. Anyone wishing to join the walk can obtain sponsor forms from Tony Dunning (01751 472627 work, or 01751 473697 evening), Brian Wood (01751 472403) or Anthony Handley (01751 473125).

The Pikes are also looking for fence panel sponsors. You choose your own panel number and have your name put on a board in the clubhouse, all for £60. Anyone wishing to help in this appeal is asked to contact Tony Dunning or Anthony Handley to support the Pikes.

Kirkbymoorside FC

Kirkbymoorside Football Club, whose first team finished their season as runners-up in the first division of the Teesside League, had their ground and facilities inspected on Saturday by officials from the Wearside League, which the Moorsiders have applied to join next season.

The Wearside League is a Step 7 League in the FA pyramid. The Moorsiders were informed what work had to be done for the start of next season and future work within a year or so.

At the moment the Wearside League has just one division and just one vacancy, but maybe two if Whitehaven finish as runners-up and get promoted into the Northern League second division.

There are five applicants. Two are reserve teams, Newton Aycliffe who have just won the Durham Alliance, Kirkbymoorside and Scarborough Town who have also applied to the Teesside League and they intend to play on the McCain sports ground, Osgodby Lane, Scarborough. This team is a new team, an extension of the current under-19 team they run. The Wearside league's annual general meeting is to be held on Tuesday, June 3.

Edgehill FC

Edgehill Football Cub, who finished third in the Scarborough and District League first division, beat Bedale 3-2 last Tuesday evening at Stokesley to win the North Riding CFA Saturday Challenge Cup for the first time in 20 years thanks to a brace of goals scored by man of the match Joel Ramm. Ben David scored the third goal after excellent work by Ramm.

Ramm's first goal was a penalty after Ryan Jackson had been fouled but Bedale equalised before half-time. In the second half Ramm scored his second goal following a Mark Barber cross. Ben David headed his side into a 3-1 lead, and Bedale, who play in the second division of the Teesside League, scored their second goal two minutes from the end.
