Malton's Simon Dyson tries out the new driving range

RYEDALE'S star golfer Simon Dyson has paid a whistlestop visit to his old stamping ground.

The two-time European Tour title winner, who hails from Malton, was back home on official business.

Dyson, currently ranked number 73 in the world, accepted an invitation to open a new 10-bay driving range at Pike Hills Golf Club, York.

He dropped into the club before embarking on a round with his brother, Nick, who has just joined Pike Hills.

Dyson, fresh from his joint third placing in the Malaysian Open, said: "It's great to be back as I have not seen my family for three months because of my Tour commitments.

"Nick's started playing the game again after a lengthy break and is a member now at Pike Hills, so it was an honour to be asked to open the new range."

Conditions at the opening of the £15,000 range were a far cry from professional Dyson's last competition when he had to contend with stifling humidity of 80 per cent and 38 degree heat in Kuala Lumpur which saw him drink no fewer than 18 litres of water on the Saturday of that tournament.

Nick has acted as caddy for Simon at several top events over the past few years.

Meanwhile, Dyson's club, Malton & Norton, are chasing national silverware.

The club's Mail on Sunday Ladies Team are threatening to better the success at the end of last year of their men's squad.

The women got off to a great start in 2008 by beating Hornsea Ladies 5-0 at Malton last weekend. Representing Malton were Jackie Roberts, Liz Jones, Jean Mackenzie, Pat Hague and Judy Butler.

The Malton men made it all the way to the national finals in Spain and finished in third place.
