Gala event kicks off Scarborough Spa Orchestra's centenary

Scarborough Spa Orchestra celebrates its centenary season this summer, starting with a Diamond Jubilee Gala called Orb and Sceptre on Sunday at 7.45pm.

Years ago there were at least three concerts a day at The Spa. Nowadays there are nine each week, all completely different, and over a five-week cycle it’s rare to hear even a single piece repeated.

For many of the regular audience, the highlight of each week is the Thursday night gala concert. The first of these will be a celebration of the orchestra itself as it enters its centenary season. Musical director Paul Laidlaw promises a programme that will show off the orchestra in its many guises: classical orchestra, show band, dance band, palm court, light orchestra and so on.
