THE Saltbox Gallery and Workshop is showing a variety of vibrant new work for the Christmas season, called a Winter Landscape.

This collection of contemporary fine craft and art has been selected by gallery owner Louise Dwyer, bringing a festive fusion of work together in Helmsley.

The Winter Landscape exhibition demonstrates a close connection between the landscape and the environment, which have proved inspiration for the works.

The artists selected for this exhibition all live in Yorkshire and are part of the East Riding Artists Group. East Yorkshire has a diverse landscape, from the rugged nature of the east coast often depicted in the ceramic work of Jill Ford and Barbara Wood, to the coastal plains of Holderness shown in Elaine Turnbull’s colourful acrylic paintings.

Contemporary design takes its place in the work of Claire West and Peter Schoenecker. Claire is a visual artist whose work has been bought and loaned for use in television. Her work is vibrant and textural, full of colour. Peter Schonecker is a professional graphic designer who has recently developed interesting mixed media work whilst living in the Wolds.

The work by painter Rob Moore and sculptor Peter Brown, meanwhile, is dynamic and expressive of the relationship between time, place and memory. Hilary Angle is showing her mixed media paintings, Mimi Claughton depicts lively and well recognised landscapes, and Michael Mulkay creates baskets in constructed natural rattan.

The gallery is also showing colourful textile jewellery by Gemma Nemmer from Sheffield who uses Liberty fabrics, vintage 1960s patterns, ties, florists wire, nylon and vintage collected buttons.

Each piece is created individually and she executes her work with traditional dressmaking skills. Gemma’s work has a contemporary feel, creating a fusion of colour, clashing patterns and texture.

The Saltbox Gallery also has a new collection of designer jewellery on display, including enamel brooches, silver and gold jewellery and colourful pieces made from aluminium, by designers such as Isabel Busnel, Jacqueline Warrington, Michael Peckitt and Deepti Sacheva.

The gallery is open Tuesday and Wednesday 10am-3.45pm; Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10am-4.30pm; and Sunday 1pm-4pm.
