RIEVAULX Terrace is playing host to a truly natural sculpture exhibition this spring.

Inspired by Nature features the work of chainsaw artist Simon Archer.

The National Trust property, near Helmsley, is hosting 20 sculptures at Rievaulx Terrace that have been inspired by the simplicity and beauty of the

natural world, and invites visitors to follow the winding woodland paths to discover imaginative wood carved sculptures.

The sculptures on display include, owls hiding in the nook of a tree, giant redwood pine cones, a bursting seed pod and a descending sycamore seed.

Simon Archer, based at Formby, near Liverpool, uses traditional wood carving tools alongside chainsaws to create unique artworks from dead or fallen wood.

His passion for recycling organic material means that many of Simon’s designs derive from each individual piece of wood, taking inspiration from its shape and form.

By following the natural contours and curves of the wood, each sculpture reveals its own character as his work progresses.

Simon said: “My influences come from nature, whether I’m carving a tiny

animal pendant or chainsaw carving a large tree butt into a sculpture or a seat.”

Laura Kennedy, visitor experience manager at Rievaulx Terrace, said: “Simon’s work really does sit perfectly within the setting of Rievaulx Terrace.

“The simplicity and beauty of each sculpture works in harmony with woodland backdrop, and the subject and inspiration for each sculpture is clear to see.

“We hope that as visitors wander through the woods, they will be we enchanted by the discovery of each piece.”

The exhibition is on display until Sunday, June 10, and normal admission prices applies.

Rievaulx Terrace is open Monday to Sunday, from 10am to 5pm.
