HELMSLEY Arts Centre plays host to many live screenings from stages across the world, including performances from The Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, Glyndebourne operas in East Sussex and The National Theatre in London.

The first National Theatre performance of the new summer season at Helmsley is Obsession starring award-winning, Jude Law on Thursday, 11 May, 7pm. Broadcast live from the Barbican Theatre in London, this stage performance is a live adaptation of Luchino Visconti’s 1943 film. A chilling tale of passion and destruction, Obsession tells the story of magnetically handsome drifter, Gino and his passionate affair with a married woman he meets at a road side restaurant and the plot to murder her husband.

On Thursday,18 May, 7pm, Imelda Staunton known for her role as Vera Drake and her character, Dolores Umbridge, in the Harry Potter films, stars in Edward Albee’s play, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? alongside Game of Thrones actor, Conleth Hill. Having received 5 stars from The Guardian, it’s been described as ‘one of those rare occasions when play, performance and production perfectly coalesce.’

Other NT theatre screenings at the HAC include a matinée broadcast of Peter Pan on Sunday 11 June, 2.30pm perfect for a family outing. Termed ‘Spellbindingly imaginative’ by the Radio Times, Peter Pan is a stage adaptation of J.M Barry’s classic children’s story. In addition Parts 1 and 2 of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America are being screened on Thursday 20 and 27 July 7pm, starring Andrew Garfield lead man of Oscar-winning, Hacksaw Ridge, also being shown at the Arts Centre in May. Additionally, both female led plays, Salomé and Yerma hit the big screen on Thursday 22 July and Thursday, 31 August 7pm, with Billie Piper winning Best Actress for Yerma and the play winning Best Revival in the Oliver Awards.

As well as National Theatre screenings, The Royal Shakespeare Company are in full swing of their Rome season with Antony and Cleopatre left to screen on Wednesday, 24 May and the gory, revenge tragedy, Titus Andronicus on Wed 9 August, both at 7pm.

Glyndebourne are also presenting three shows this season with the first being La Traviata on Thursday 8 June 6pm, which is described as the perfect introduction to Glyndebourne if you are a intrigued opera newcomer. The second screening is of Shakespeare’s classic Hamlet on Sunday, 9 July again at 6pm and finally La Clemenza Di Tito on Thursday, 3 August 6pm, a story of love and revenge.
