SCARBOROUGH Symphony Orchestra’s next concert is a musical celebration of British traditions from a bygone era.

Twentieth century favourites from two of England’s greatest composers, Benjamin Britten and Ralph Vaughan Williams, celebrate the Queen’s coronation and the sights and sounds of Edwardian London. A lyrical and exuberant trumpet concerto rounds off the military and royal theme for the evening.

Trumpet soloist Niall McEwen, well-known across the north of England for his solo work with orchestras and music societies, plays the exciting and challenging trumpet concerto by John Carmichael, written in 1972.

Niall is also a Co-ordinator for Hull’s Music Service and the majority of his time is now taken up with teaching but, having coached and worked with the orchestra in the past, Niall is very much looking forward to performing as guest soloist with them.

He said: “The orchestra has been praised by many visiting professional soloists for its extremely high standard. It is marvellous to see that North Yorkshire is home to such a talented and enthusiastic orchestra and also an appreciative and growing audience of classical music supporters."

The evening opens with Benjamin Britten, who composed the opera Gloriana in 1953, dedicated to the Queen in honour of her coronation. The concert features the Courtly Dances - a single-movement suite of seven dances taken from Act III.

The second half of the programme is Ralph Vaughan Williams’ epic view of Edwardian London; his Symphony No.2, nicknamed A London Symphony. Premièred in 1914, the symphony underwent many revisions by Vaughan Williams and has now become a firm favourite of concert-goers and musicians.

The concert is on Saturday, May 6, at 7.15pm at the Queen Street Methodist Hall in Scarborough. Admission is £11 (£9.50 for concessions). Entry for children up to 16 and full-time students is free. Tickets can be purchased direct from Revolutions Music in Huntriss Row Scarborough, or The Art Cafe in Whitby as well as through the orchestra’s website - www.scarbrough-orchestra.co.uk or at the door on the night. .
