A ONE-man show which portrays one of Britain’s greatest Hollywood stars comes to the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, later this month.

Burton vividly presents the life of the great Welsh actor Richard Burton in his own words from humble beginnings to Hollywood mega-stardom. Beautiful women (not least Liz Taylor), alcohol, wealth, stage and screen are the threads woven into this sad, happy, exuberant and often hilarious one-man show. Drink was the only real anodyne to his deteriorating health and mental state, his doomed tempestuous relationship with Taylor and his constant guilt over the abandonment of his family.

Written by Gwynne Edwards and directed by Gareth Armstrong, Burton is performed by Rhodri Miles and received critical acclaim at two Edinburgh Fringe Festivals (2009/2014) and also at the Hollywood fringe festival 2010 where the play won Best International Show.

Rhodri was born in Swansea and brought up in Pontarddulais. He originally joined the Metropolitan Police but left to pursue a career treading the boards rather than the beat. As a boy he regularly competed at the Welsh National Eisteddfod, winning first prize at recitation on ten occasions, including the blue ribbon chief recital competition at Neath National Eisteddfod in 1994, earning him a green robe for the arts in the Bardic Circle. Having appeared on the Welsh language soap Pobol Y Cwm for five years he returned to study acting in 1999 at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Since then he has been seen on TV in Holby City, Torchwood, Richard II – Hollow Crown series, Atlantis and Game of Thrones. Rhodri currently lives just outside Swansea, six miles away from the birthplace of Richard Burton.

Burton can be seen in the SJT’s McCarthy auditorium at 7.45pm on Wednesday, March 29. Tickets cost from £10 to £18, with £5 tickets available for under-26s. To book, call the box office on 01723 370541, or visit the website: www.sjt.uk.com
