SCARBOROUGH’S Stephen Joseph Theatre has announced eight new streamings of great plays, operas and ballets from London’s National Theatre and Royal Opera House for the late winter and early spring of 2017.

Classic plays Amadeus, Hedda Gabler, Saint Joan and Twelfth Night, operas Il Trovatore, Madama Butterfly and ballets Woolf Works and The Sleeping Beauty join the already-announced No Man’s Land and The Tempest for a flying start to the new year streaming season.

Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart return to the West End stage in Harold Pinter’s comic classic.

The Tempest (RSC Live)

Wednesday 11 January, 7pm

A bold reimagining of Shakespeare’s most magical play with the help of Intel and Andy Serkis' Imaginarium; features some of today's most advanced technology.

Il trovatore (ROH Live – delayed)

Sung in Italian with English subtitles

The first revival of David Bösch’s new production for The Royal Opera - themes of jealousy, revenge and love play out against a hauntingly beautiful, wintry landscape that has been riven by war in Verdi’s great opera.

Woolf Works (ROH Live)

The first revival of Wayne McGregor’s critically acclaimed ballet triptych to music by Max Richter, inspired by the works of Virginia Woolf and starring Alessandra Ferri and Mara Galeazzi.

Amadeus (NT Live – delayed)

Lucian Msamati plays Salieri in Peter Shaffer’s iconic play with live orchestral accompaniment by Southbank Sinfonia. The musical director is Scarborough-born Simon Slater, who is also the composer for the SJT’s Christmas production, Pinocchio.

Tony Award-winning director Ivo van Hove (A View from the Bridge at the Young Vic Theatre) returns to National Theatre Live screens with a modern production of Ibsen’s masterpiece. Ruth Wilson plays the title role in a new version by Patrick Marber.

Josie Rourke directs Gemma Arterton as Joan of Arc in this electrifying production of Bernard Shaw’s classic play.

Madama Butterfly (ROH Live)

The romantic exoticism of 19th-century European images of Japan – an integral part of Madama Butterfly’s character – inspire Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier’s elegant production for The Royal Opera.
