TV historian Dr David Starkey will be appearing at Helmsley Arts Centre on Friday.

As one of the UK’s leading constitutional historian Dr Starkey, who is known for his forthright views, will discuss the Magna Carta, with an assessment of the situation then, and how our constitution stands today exactly 800 years later.

Dr Starkey is a Cambridge educated grammar school boy who became a respected LSE lecturer, a uniquely abrasive debater on Radio 4’s Moral Maze, and the creator and presenter of many popular historical TV series on such subjects as Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, the Monarchy, the Churchills, and Music and Monarchy. Dr Starkey is a truly inspirational speaker.

Vamos Theatre, the UK’s leading full mask theatre company, is bringing its latest national touring show, The Best Thing, to the arts centre on Saturday.

Funny, heart-breaking and human, The Best Thing is set in the 1960s and tells the story of 17-year-old Susan, growing up during the changing times of the decade.

A bitter-sweet story of mistaken morals and broken hearts, 45s and beehives, the production looks at what the sexual revolution really meant for young people living through it. Humorous and poignant, The Best Thing features 1960s music and design, and is a chance to see the highest quality full mask theatre.

The award-winning Vamos Theatre has been praised by the BBC and The Stage as one of the UK’s major exponents of full mask, an innovative and unique style of theatre; it has no speech, and the story is told visually, supported by design, music, and lighting. In Vamos’s hands it’s one of the most engaging, human, and personal theatre experiences around.

The company, based in Worcester, tours nationally and internationally every year, and aims to showcase and popularise this fascinating theatre genre. Unusually for a theatre production, its visual style also makes it completely accessible to deaf and partially deaf audiences, without the need for signer or captions.
