A UNIQUE evening of storytelling and song will move, entertain and stimulate audiences at Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre (SJT) .

Presented by siblings James and Elizabeth Boag, who were brought up in Pickering, Yoga and the stories of a human life will encourage audience participation to explore ancient yet timeless and ever-fresh stories from the Indian yoga tradition, bringing them vividly into the context of our lives today.

James is a Sanskrit scholar and teaches applied yoga philosophy and mythology around the world. Drawing on his background in languages, literature and scriptural teaching, he brings the practical essence of traditional Indian teachings into the vivid context of our human lives today. His soulful and intoxicating voice invites us into a welcoming space of warm, healing and uplifting sound.

In recent years, James has been teaching regularly in Yorkshire, where he is a seasonal highlight of York Yoga Studio’s guest programme, has performed at Helmsley Arts Centre and combines story, philosophy, song, meditation and yoga on programmes with Mrs Osborne Recommends, including upcoming weekend retreats at Ampleforth Abbey on May 13 to 15 and November 18 to 20.

Elizabeth is an actress who has performed regularly at the SJT in recent seasons, taking principal roles in Alan Ayckbourn's Arrivals & Departures, Farcicals, Roundelay (on tour), Confusions and Hero's Welcome. She trained in music theatre originally and is thrilled to return to the round stage to combine her singing voice with her brother's for this unique event.

James and Elizabeth both attended Lady Lumley’s School in Pickering. Their parents were keen theatregoers so both children grew up immersed in theatrical storytelling with regular trips to Opera North, York Theatre Royal and the SJT.

Growing up, James was passionate about sports. He played tennis for North Yorkshire schools, and basketball for the local men’s team in Scarborough before joining the Cardiff University Basketball team. At Cardiff, he also performed songs and monologues for the French theatre group.

Elizabeth danced at Kirkham Henry in Malton, competing in dance competitions across Yorkshire and starring in numerous Ryedale Youth Theatre and Pickering Musical Society productions before going to University in Leeds and then on to the Mountview Conservatoire in London.

Both siblings have journeyed far and wide since then, continuing to pursue physical challenges whilst exploring their love of creative storytelling.

Elizabeth said: “We are thrilled to have this opportunity to perform together in our home county, bringing an exciting evening of entertainment to the stage that so inspired both of us.”
