A BIG screen showing of a classic concert by rock group Queen and two "encore" showings of hit plays have joined the exciting line-up of films and streamings in the Stephen Joseph Theatre’s McCarthy cinema this spring and summer.

The latest addition to the film programme is Queen: Live in Bohemia, on Wednesday, May 4, at 7.45pm. Filmed live on Christmas Eve 1975 at the Hammersmith Odeon in London, and bringing to a climax the most eventful and exciting year so far in the band’s career, this ground-breaking concert was transmitted live on BBC Two’s Old Grey Whistle Test and captured the band firing on all cylinders as they performed breakthrough hits like Killer Queen, Liar, Keep Yourself Alive and Now I’m Here, as well as the now monumental classic Bohemian Rhapsody. This special cinema event includes a fascinating archive documentary featuring performance footage and interviews with all four members of the band, offering an illuminating insight into the game-changing year of 1975.

Streamings – often live, occasionally "delayed" by several days – see shows from some of the UK’s top theatre companies, including the National Theatre, the Royal Opera House and the RSC, sent live from the venue to cinema screens around the world. Particularly popular shows can receive an ‘encore’ – another showing months, or even years, later. Two encore streamings have also been added to the SJT’s spring/summer programme – A View from the Bridge and The Audience.

Ivo Van Hove’s extraordinary production of Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge, starring Mark Strong and Nicola Walker, return to the McCarthy cinema on Thursday, May 12. It was seen live at the venue last April. The show won 2015 Olivier Awards for Best Revival, Best Actor and Best Director.

And on Thursday, June 9, audiences can catch again Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II in Peter Morgan’s hit show The Audience, directed by Stephen Daldry. It is returning to cinemas to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. This time round, a Q&A with Helen Mirren and Stephen Daldry, recorded during the show’s Broadway run, has been added to the streaming. The Audience won three Tony Awards and two Olivier Awards.

The SJT has also added new venues to its programme of live streamings for this summer, showing operas from Glyndebourne and plays by the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company.
