THE new season opens at Helmsley Arts Centre this weekend with an inspiring concert in the relaxed atmosphere of the Studio Bar.

Some Enchanted Sondheim, performed by singer Jess Liversidge and pianist Malcolm Maddock, celebrates the timeless songs of Oscar Hammerstein II and Stephen Sondheim.

From Oklahoma to Follies and Into the Woods; from Some Enchanted Evening to Send in the Clowns, these are songs of longing, love, loss and hope from one of the best local singer/piano duos in the area. Described by Neil Foster of BBC Radio York as “a wonderful evening of music, informal and informative”, the concert starts at 7.30pm on Saturday.

The arts centre cinema is busy in the next few weeks with screenings of the new James Bond film Spectre on Wednesday, 20 and Friday, January 22, and tickets are still available for the 1950s Ireland/New York love story Brooklyn on Wednesday, January 27.

There will be two live screenings as well this month, unmissable quality first from the Bolshoi Ballet, whose new production of Shostakovich's The Taming of the Shrew will be screened live on Sunday, January 24, at 3pm.

French choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot lands a coup with his adaptation of Shakespeare's comedy tailored specifically to the Bolshoi dancers, and achieves a magnetic two hours of breathtaking, non-stop dance unlike any other, revealing the Bolshoi’s audacity and energy in a completely new way. This new production was staged exclusively for the Bolshoi and cannot be seen anywhere else.

Thursday, January 28, sees a National Theatre Live screening from the Donmar Warehouse of the highly-anticipated new production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses.

Directed by Josie Rourke (Coriolanus), the cast includes Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), Janet McTeer (The White Queen) and Dominic West (The Wire). In 1782, Choderlos de Laclos’ novel of sex, intrigue and betrayal in pre-revolutionary France scandalised the world, 200 years later, Christopher Hampton's irresistible adaptation won the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Play. Josie Rourke’s revival now marks the play’s thirty year anniversary.
