SCARBOROUGH Spa Orchestra brings a Viennese start to 2016 when they return for their special New Year’s Day Concert, which takes place at 3pm on Friday, January 1.

Vienna: City of Dreams, and is designed as a tribute to the many composers of popular light music whose dreams came true when they found fame and fortune in Vienna.

The tradition of playing Viennese music on New Year’s Day goes back nearly a 100 years, and its popularity has never diminished. Once again, the Scarborough Spa Orchestra continues its own tradition of packing up to a thousand audience members into the Grand Hall for an afternoon of waltzes, polkas, overtures and selections from the Strauss family and other Viennese composers.

Johann Strauss’s lively and tuneful waltz melodies have never lost their attraction, and their popularity has been boosted in recent years by the world-wide performances of Andre Rieu and his orchestra. Most major orchestras in this country and abroad will be celebrating this music at New Year, and the Spa Orchestra is once again delighted to be part of that celebration.

Led by the ever popular Paul Laidlaw, the professional Spa musicians will entertain the audience with some of Strauss’s most famous waltzes, including The Blue Danube and Voices of Spring. Polkas will up the tempo with the likes of Thunder and Lightning and Tritsch-Tratsch. Fore-runners of the modern stage musical will be represented by selections from Die Fledermaus and Franz Lehar’s evergreen The Merry Widow. The whole programme is designed to entertain with great tunes.

Tickets for The Spa Orchestra New Year's Day Concert are £13, £12 (concessions) and available from The Spa’s box office on 01723 821888 and via scarboroughspa.co.uk
