MULLED wine and Medieval magic are on offer at a seasonal concert next week.

The Ryedale Festival is aiming to offer something different for Christmas by welcoming the acclaimed medieval group Joglaresa to St Michael's Church, Malton on Friday, December 4, at 7.30pm.

Joglaresa specialise in bringing ancient music to life and feature bagpipes, harp, bells, fidel (an ancient type of violin), percussion and voices.

They will be playing a programme of traditional and medieval carols and wassails from all over the British Isles, including some that have become very famous, like In Dulci Jubilo, but also other haunting and long-forgotten melodies from the Celtic fringes of Europe.

According to The Times, their playing is ‘thrilling and haunting’, while the recent reviewer from The Scotsman was ‘blown away by their charm and originality.’

Ryedale Festival artistic director Christopher Glynn, said: ‘I hope people will be inspired by this rather different Christmas celebration. The performances of Joglaresa are something very special and full of energy and life. They create a magical atmosphere with these ancient melodies - the perfect way to ring in Christmas and the New Year.’

The Christmas Concert comes after a successful summer festival that saw record-breaking ticket sales.

Chairman Robin Andrews said: ‘Here we are at the end of the year but less than four months away from the start of the booking period for the 2016 Festival. Why not become a Member or Friend of the Festival, and assure yourself of priority booking. Now that the Festival is independent of public funding it needs you."

Tickets, for the concert priced £15, include a glass of mulled wine and are available from the Ryedale Festival Box Office o 01751 475777 or boxoffice@ryedalefestival.com.
