THE Milton Rooms’ Christmas programme opens with a magical treat for children – the joyful classic story of The Little Match Girl told through puppets and song.

This is a fun, festive twist on the well-known Hans Christian Andersen tale brought to life by the Moon on a Stick puppetry company, led by acclaimed artistic director Alice Sillett.

It is ideal for children aged three and over, providing a perfect family alternative to the usual pantomime

The stage is transformed into a stunning snowy spectacle, complete with carols and audience interaction. Snow covers the ground and the little match girl is alone and cold on the streets of London on Christmas Eve.

She sees Christmas scenes through the windows which sparkle with lights and she hears merry voices singing. She is desperate to get warm and so lights the matches that she has been selling.

With each match she finds herself transported by its warmth into the scenes behind the glass. She meets Father Christmas, plays in the snow with a snow man and enjoys a delicious feast.

Alice said: “Our production explores the traditions surrounding Christmas. It looks at the themes of charity, love, family and hope, leaving the audience asking themselves what Christmas means to them. It is both joyful and reflective."

There is also a free workshop for those attending the performance. The ‘What does Christmas mean to you?’ workshop explores festive traditions and what makes Christmas magic. It includes seasonal games and play.

There are two scheduled shows on Sunday, December 6, at 1.45pm and 3.45pm (performance lasts 50 minutes) with the workshop at 2.45pm (lasting 30 minutes) free for those attending either performance. The workshop is suitable for six to 10 year olds.

Tickets for The Little Match Girl are £4 per child (with one adult free with each child), available from the Milton Rooms box office in Malton, or phone 01653 696240.
