HELMSLEY Arts Centre has full weekend of theatre and music in store.

On Thursday and Friday there are two performances by the senior 1812 Youth Theatre, of Sam Holcroft's The Wardrobe, which tells a story, across five centuries, of small groups of children who seek refuge in the same solid old wardrobe. It's the safest place they know - but is it safe enough?

Touring company North Country Theatre make a welcome return to the arts centre on Saturday, with their latest production, A Gift of Stones, an adaptation of Jim Crace’s award-winning historical novel by director Nobby Dimon.

The village of flint knappers is safe, self-satisfied and inward looking, but a stray arrow, an amputation, and a wild woman from the salt sea marshes bring murder, mystery and cataclysmic change.

Narrated by a one-armed storyteller and his daughter, in a language as pared down and flinty as their tools and weapons, the play is brought to the stage by the company whose brilliant adaptations have ranged from the hilarious 39 Steps to the scary The Rocking Horse Winner, and most recently the deeply moving A Month in the Country.

Sunday sees the young Welsh folk band Calan, which bring together the remarkable talents of five young musicians, giving a fresh and vibrant sound to traditional Welsh music.

Fiddles, guitar, accordion and bagpipes explode into life as infectious guitar rhythms and high voltage routines give way to beautiful and haunting songs. With a contemporary and lively approach, they breathe new life into the old traditions through their sparkling melodies, foot tapping tunes and spirited and energetic performances of Welsh step dancing.
