IT’S time for all things art deco as the Stephen Joseph Theatre (SJT), in Scarborough, prepares to transport visitors back to the 1930s.

In tribute to its 1936 Odeon building, the theatre welcomes all to its annual Deco Days event with free architectural tours, cloche hat and make-up workshops, cinema screenings of films from the period and an action-packed show with music and dance reminiscent of New York’s famous Cotton Club.

Deco Days takes place on Friday and Saturday and this year celebrates the femme fatale.

There’s the chance to get the femme fatale look with wardrobe technician Ruth Hill-Beeley who will be leading a cloche hat workshop on Friday, from 10am to 4pm, where guests will be guided through all stages of shaping and trimming their own vampish 1930s’ style hat, as well as a vintage hair and make-up workshop taking place on Saturday, from 1.30pm to 4.30pm.

Humphrey Bogart, Bette Davis and Clark Gable are some of the stars you can see on the big screen at the SJT. The Maltese Falcon, Dark Victory and It Happened One Night will be showing in the cinema across both days with screenings taking place at 2pm, 5pm and 8pm. The theatre is running a special Deco Days offer to see one film for £7, two for £12 and three for £14.

Visitors can also go behind the scenes and find out more about the original Odeon building and its features in free guided architectural tours taking place at 10.30am and 12noon on the Friday and Saturday (advance booking required).

Rounding off this year’s event are the Jiving Lindy Hoppers and Harry Stutters Hot Rhythm Orchestra who present Swinging at the Cotton Club on November 7 at 7.30pm featuring music from the likes of Duke Ellington, Cab Colloway, Ella Fitzgerald and many more.

Theatre staff will be providing a warm 1930s’ welcome dressed in original Odeon ushers’ outfits, and guests are also invited to join in the fun and dress for the occasion with a bit of dangerous glamour. Deco Days wouldn’t be complete without a delicious afternoon or cream tea served in the Bistro which is open from 11am on both days.

Tickets to all events can be booked online at sjt.uk.com and through the box office on 01723 370541.
