THE first of a series of concerts celebrating the life of Music in the Round founder Peter Cropper will take place at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough.

Opening on November 10, concerts will be held in places which have previously hosted the renowned violinist, who died suddenly in May, and the Sheffield-based company Music in the Round.

The music - a selection of Schubert, Beethoven, Haydn and others - was chosen by Peter himself, as the performances were originally intended to mark his 70th birthday.

They demonstrate his love of playing with friends and the importance of family.

The concerts include appearances from long-standing friends and colleagues and will provide an opportunity for audiences to reflect on the immense impression Peter made on chamber music worldwide throughout his distinguished career.

In Scarborough, violinist Katharine Gowers, pianist Martin Roscoe and cellist Moray Welsh will perform a programme of Haydn’s Trio in C Hob. XVI No. 27, Smetana’s Trio in G minor Op. 15 and Beethoven’s Trio in B flat Op. 97 Archduke.

Stephen Joseph Theatre chief executive Mathew Russell said: “We are proud to present a concert marking what would have been the 70th birthday of Music in the Round’s founder, Peter Cropper.

"He made an immense impression on chamber music worldwide, both as a brilliant performer and as a passionate advocate for it.”

Tickets to the concert at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, priced from £10 to £17.50 or £6 for under 30s, can be bought online at sjt.uk.com and from the box office on 01723 370541.
