EARLY, Renaissance and Baroque music will be the order of the evening at The Moors National Park Centre next week when the Caedmon Singers and Instrumental Ensemble give a concert in the unique surroundings of the Inspired by… gallery.

Directed by Sue Pilkington-Hanna, and initially comprising Sue’s students and other musical friends, these invitational groups have been running for seven years.

This evening sees Lisa Armstrong, Sue Boyd, Linda Cox, Mandy Field, Judith Hargreaves and Wendy Scrivener performing madrigals (part songs) and other vocal pieces by the cream of the Elizabethan court and others by well-known Baroque composers. The instrumental ensemble of Barbara Anderson, Bob Butterfield, Jolyon Cox and Julie Lee is augmented by some of the vocalists who have dual talents.

From the toe-tapping dance music of Arbeau, Praetorius and Susato, performed by a full recorder consort and brass, the groups move into the Baroque period with pieces by Vivaldi, Handel.

Using instruments of the period, they will take their audience back to the1400s and then forwards into the 1600s.

Tickets are £5 and advance booking is recommended on 01439 772737 or moorscentre@northyorkmoors.org.uk

Music-lovers will also be able to grab a last-minute viewing of the exhibition A Meander Down the Esk, which closes on September 22.

Featuring watercolours and drawings by Whitby artist John Freeman, it can be seen at the Inspired by… gallery daily, from 10.30am to 4pm. Entry is free.
