LANDSCAPES by Scarborough artist Peter Watson, which take a different look at the Wolds, coast, moors and forests of Yorkshire, have gone on show at Sledmere.

Peter’s new exhibition, entitled East Yorkshire landscapes and beyond, is at the Triton Gallery until Sunday, August 2.

The exhibition will include recent originals of many East and North Yorkshire landscapes, plus canvas prints, including some of Peter’s older depictions of industrial landscapes in south Yorkshire.

It also shows scenes of coastal erosion on the Holderness coast.

Peter said: “The exhibition is mainly oils on canvas, but also includes a handful of canvas prints, many of them striking industrial landscapes from the 1970s and 1980s. There are also paintings depicting the way the East Yorkshire coast is rapidly eroding, and man’s attempts to prevent that.

“I enjoy finding different ways of looking at familiar places in the county.”

Peter will be sharing exhibition space at the Triton Gallery with textile artist Angela Morris, who is a member of the Mid Wales Embroiderers group and the Wye Severn Textile Group, who will be showing fabric designs influenced by her time spent in West Africa and Kenya.

Peter’s work can also be seen at the Staithes Festival of Arts and Heritage on September 12 and 13. During this unique weekend festival, artists set up temporary galleries in the picturesque coastal village’s many cottages – Peter’s work will be seen in the harbourside Viking Cottage.

The Triton Gallery, Sledmere, opened in 2008 and is now one of East Yorkshire's most prominent exhibition spaces for contemporary art. The gallery is housed in the magnificent building opposite the entrance to Sledmere House, built in the 1840s as a "model farm".

It is open every day, except Monday, from 10.30am to 3.30pm.
