THREE identical “mirror” exhibitions presenting new work by 40 printmakers from four countries is opening simultaneously at venues in North Yorkshire, Finland and Sweden.

Featuring printmakers from Yorkshire, Scotland, Finland and Sweden, the project aims to offer a reflection on printmaking from an international perspective, drawing upon ideas of place, identity and the environments in which the artists live and work.

The exhibitions are the result of an international collaboration project, Connections North, between Chrysalis Arts, based in NorthYorkshire, the North York Moors National Park, Ratamo Print and Photography Centre in Finland, Ålgården, Sweden and Highland Print Studio, based in Scotland.

In North Yorkshire, The Inspired by…gallery, at Danby, has been selected as the venue for the UK opening of Mirror Images, which will be on show from Saturday, May 9, to Monday, June 15, before touring three other venues.

In addition to this is a region-wide series of print exhibitions, workshops, and talks. Printmakers from the UK include:

• Bronwen Sleigh, a Scottish printmaker living and working in Glasgow, who studied at the Royal College of Art and has work in collections throughout the world

• Ian Burke is a painter/printmaker, whose artwork is based on the coastline from the River Tees to the River Esk and the hinterland of the North Yorkshire Moors, where he still lives. He is also head of art at Eton College

• Katy Spong’s prints reveal a fascination with her surroundings on the West Coast of Scotland, in particular the birdlife of the bay

• Moira McTague, a painter/printmaker based in North Yorkshire, whose current work includes etchings that have developed from museum collections of birds, butterflies, eggs and nests.

Organiser Rick Faulkner, from Chrysalis Arts, said: “This project is essentially a collaboration designed to bring artists’ work to different audiences in different countries and to celebrate the quality and diversity to be found within contemporary printmaking.”
