DO you want to join the chorus of old ladies in The Ladykillers at Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre?

It doesn’t matter whether you are male or female, if you are aged 16 or above and feel confident in appearing on stage and in a dress, this is your chance to perform in the smash-hit comedy.

The New Vic, Newcastle-under-Lyme, and Hull Truck Theatre are bringing a new adaptation of Graham Linehan’s Ealing classic to the Stephen Joseph from May 5 to 9 and they are looking to recruit six “old ladies” to perform throughout the Scarborough run.

Anyone interested in taking part is invited to a group audition at the theatre on Saturday, April 25, from 11am to 1pm, run by Hull Truck’s Tom Bellerby.

He said: “We’re very excited to be involving the community in this production. The community chorus will be involved in one key scene in which Mrs Wilberforce invites her friends to what she thinks will be a wonderful musical recital by her musician acquaintances who aren’t musicians at all but a motley collection of crooks.”

Those selected for the volunteer community chorus will be invited to rehearsals on Saturday, May 2 and Tuesday, May 5.

Successful applicants must also be able to commit to all local performances from Tuesday, May 5 to Saturday, May 9, which includes performances at 7.30pm each night, except Thursday when there is an earlier show at 7pm, plus matinees at 1.30pm on Thursday, May 7 and 2.30pm on Saturday, May 9.

The Ladykillers, by television writer Graham Linehan (Father Ted, Black Books, The IT Crowd), sees a motley crew of misfits pose as amateur musicians to rent rooms from the sweetly eccentric Mrs Wilberforce.

The police have no idea that they are planning a daring robbery, but Mrs Wilberforce is not so easily deceived. Criminal mastermind Professor Marcus decides that there’s only one way to keep the old lady quiet – Mrs Wilberforce must face the music. And he doesn’t mean a string quartet.
