TWO of the country’s leading entertainers are coming to the area this summer.

Sir Tom Jones is to play at York Racecourse on Friday, July 24 as part of the Music Showcase Weekend at the Knavesmire track, before heading to the Scarborough Open Air Theatre on July 29 for his first-ever concert in the seaside town.

Fellow musician Jools Holland is bringing his rhythm and blues orchestra to Castle Howard for a one-off performance as part of this year’s Summer Sounds on Friday, August 21.

Sir Tom, who is currently a judge on BBC show The Voice, has chalked up more than 30 hits since It’s Not Unusual made the top spot in 1965, charting with the likes of Delilah, She’s A Lady, What’s New Pussycat, The Green, Green Grass Of Home, Kiss and Sex Bomb.

He said: “I’ve always loved performing live and can’t wait to be part of what I understand is the very special atmosphere of a music showcase night at York Races.”

James Brennan, head of marketing and sponsorship at the racecourse, said: “It is great news that Sir Tom, a proper legend, will be performing for us; it should be something special.”

With Castle Howard celebrating 25 years of summer picnic concerts, Jools’ brand of foot-tapping, feel-good music is the perfect way to party the night away. In addition to his amazing Rhythm and Blues orchestra, Jools will also be joined by Marc Almond, Ruby Turner, Louise Marshall, Mabel Ray and Gilson Lavis.

David Stubley, of promoter Lighthouse Events, said: “Jools has a well-deserved reputation as one our greatest entertainers and we are delighted to be bringing him to Castle Howard. The combination of the spectacular setting together with fantastic music from Jools Holland will make it a truly special evening.

“For anyone who hasn’t experienced Castle Howard’s Summer Sounds I would urge you to gather your friends and family, plan your picnics and wine and get ready for a really magical evening.”

The Jools Holland concert is the first of two shows at Castle Howard, with the Proms Spectacular taking place the following night on Saturday, August 22.
