THERE is one final opportunity to see a moving tribute to the 1914 Bombardment as part of Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre’s ReachOut Festival.

Real Life: Retold commemorates the stories that affected the community on December, 16, 1914, when German battlecruisers shelled Scarborough, Whitby and Hartlepool, killing hundreds of people and injuring many more.

Following successful performances in the three towns, the partnership project with Scarborough Museums Trust and the theatre’s OutReach department will play one last time, bringing to a close the three-week community festival on March 1 at 5pm.

In a new addition to the festival performance, Scarborough Flare poets Felix Hodcroft and Tony Howson will read original poetry between scenes illustrating the experiences of and effects on civilians in wartime. Real Life: Retold, written by Scarborough writers Michelle Watts, Liam Watt Pattison and Will Duffield and performed by community adult actors and youth theatre members, is an accessible and engaging tribute which looks at life before, during and after the Bombardment.

Denise Gilfoyle, head of OutReach, said: “The ReachOut Festival celebrates local talent and imagination and I’m delighted that we’re able to show Real Life: Retold following such a fantastic response.

“As well as poignant drama, this new performance will feature poems by Scarborough Flare and brings together local writers, actors and the community who can come and see moving stories commemorating the fateful day of the Bombardment.”

Real Life: Retold will be staged in the McCarthy at the Stephen Joseph Theatre on Sunday, March 1, at 5pm.
