HULL Philharmonic Orchestra will be appearing at the The Spa, in Bridlington, in a concert chosen by audience members.

The informal event in the Royal Hall on March 1, at 3pm, will comprise the work of nine composers, ranging from Charles Gounod to Leonard Bernstein, covering more than 100 years of music history.

With the orchestra’s musical director Andrew Penny conducting, it will feature soloist Callum Smart, one of music’s rising stars, in Max Bruch’s famous Violin Concerto No 1.

Crispin Rolfe, of Look North, who is normally a horn player in the orchestra, will present the concert.

Another player, first violin Anthony Clarke, who is a Bridlington GP, said: “I have played with the Hull Philharmonic since its 125th anniversary in 2006 and regard it as the best orchestra I have ever belonged to.

“It has a talented group of players, including professional music teachers and I hope this is the start of regular visits to the Spa.”

The orchestra is hoping to repeat the success of previous audience request programmes held at Hull City Hall in attracting big audiences.

Andrew said: “We are delighted that Callum Smart is joining us in Bridlington for Bruch’s wonderful piece.

“He looks to be on course for fame in the world of music and is the latest in the list of impressive young soloists to have had a platform with us. Our supporters have made some interesting choices.

“There will be some great music and it promises to be a lot of fun, with a few surprises along the way.”

Callum Smart emerged as a new talent in 2010 when, at the age of 13, he won the strings category in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition and was the European winner in the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition in Oslo.

He has subsequently played in many European countries and North America and recently made his debut in the Royal Philharmonic Hall in London.

The Hull Philharmonic played at the Spa last June at the Yorkshire International Business Convention and has also played in the Malcolm Arnold Festival, in Northampton, and for special events in York and Leeds.

Tickets are £7.50 to £10 for adults (concessions apply) and are available from the box office on 01262 678258 or online at thespabridlington.com and hullphilharmonic.org
