FRESH from his New Year’s Day concert on worldwide television with the Vienna Philharmonic, Ian Bousfield will be heading to Scarborough this weekend to perform the Trombone Concerto by Nino Rota, a composer best known for his Oscar-winning film scores for the first two Godfather films.

Ian, who comes originally from York, was appointed principal trombone of the Halle at the age of just 19 and then of the London Symphony Orchestra at the age of 24. He was appointed principal trombonist with the Vienna Philharmonic in 2000.

As a soloist he has performed with many of the great orchestras of the world including the Vienna Philharmonic, with whom he played the Nino Rota concerto he will be performing in Scarborough.

The concert begins with a celebration of the 150th anniversary of Jean Sibelius’s birth with a performance of his haunting Lemminkainen and the Maidens of Saari. It concludes with Glazunov’s 4th Symphony, a work that deserves to be performed far more often with memorable tunes and a rich romantic sound.

Shaun Matthew, conductor of the Scarborough Symphony Orchestra, said: “This is an incredible coup for our orchestra to perform with such a world class musician.

“Once again Scarborough’s thriving amateur orchestra will be providing an unforgettable musical occasion for local concertgoers.”

He added: “This is one of the most ambitious concert programmes that the SSO has played and a fantastic opportunity to hear some lesser-known but exceptionally moving music by great composers as well as hear a real master of the trombone right here in Scarborough.”

The concert takes place at Scarborough’s Methodist Central Hall on Saturday at 7.30pm. There is an optional free talk about the music at 6.45pm. Free parking is available.

Tickets are avilable from Scarborough Music, The Art Cafe, in Whitby, at the orchestra’s website, scarborough-orchestra.co.uk, or at the door on the night. Admission is £10 and £8.50 for concessions. Children up to 16 and full-time students are free.

New members are always welcome in the orchestra. There are currently vacancies for an oboist, a bassoonist, brass and string players. For more information visit the website.
