A HUSBAND and wife team are holding an exhibition of their photographic work at Helmsley Arts Centre.

Richard and Janet Burdon, who live in Pickering, specialise in colour and monochrome images of the natural world.

"We are drawn to wild remote places like the moors and the rugged Yorkshire coastline and often venturing to even more remote places like the western isles of Scotland and the Lofoten isles off Arctic Norway," Richard said.

"We live in a beautiful land, but few of us actually see and appreciate this beauty, so our photography is dedicated to recording this beauty. We feel privileged being in a beautiful place in glorious light and able to capture this image to share with others."

Richard used to be a salesman for a local submarine manufacturer before becoming a professional creative photographer. He said their biggest achievement so far was when he and Janet were both finalists in the Landscape Photographer Of The Year, and also the Scottish Nature Photography Awards.

“Submarine parts are easier to sell than photographs," he said. “It's one thing running the business as a side-line alongside full time employment, but it’s proving to be a challenge to translate this into a full-time business, though one I’m really enjoying.

"While the business is generating an income, I need to work hard to expand it to turn it into a living.”

In addition to the print sales, the couple also run workshops and photo walks on a one to one or small group basis, across the Yorkshire landscape in search of that moment when composition and light combine to produce an elusive perfect shot.

The exhibition will be a mixture of their trademark stark, minimal winter scenes and a selection of colour images from the wild and remote places they have visited. It runs at Helmsley Arts Centre from February 3 to February 28.
