Waltz into 2015 with The Spa Orchestra’s New Year’s Day Concert When the dancers on Strictly Come Dancing whirl around the floor with the Viennese Waltz, they are recreating the scene in the late 19th century ballrooms of Vienna when Johann Strauss was King. And it is exactly this scene, musically speaking, which will be conjured up in A Viennese Whirl, the Scarborough Spa Orchestra’s ever popular New Year’s Day concert.

The New Year tradition of Viennese music goes back nearly a hundred years, and it’s not just Andre Rieu who has seen its attraction. Most major orchestras in the UK and around the world now present similar concerts at this time of year.

The Spa Orchestra is no exception and regularly draws audiences of up to a thousand light music lovers who kick off the brand new year listening to the Orchestra in Scarborough Spa’s Grand Hall.

It seems few people can resist an afternoon of glittering waltzes by Johann Strauss himself, including, of course, the famous Blue Danube; lively polkas such as Thunder and Lightning; evergreen tunes by Franz Lehar as featured in a selection from The Merry Widow. Mixed in with these will be more lilting melodies from other composers who found fame and fortune in Vienna during the golden years of the Strauss family.

Starting at 3pm, A Viennese Whirl offers two hours of total relaxation, wallowing in glorious melodies played by the professional musicians of the Spa Orchestra, led by Paul Laidlaw.

The perfect finale to the New Year festivities.
