A NEW exhibition at the White Room Gallery in York will bring the stark beauty of a moorland winter into the heart of the city.

Rosedale Abbey glassmakers Stephen Gillies and Kate Jones, known as Gillies Jones glass, are renowned for the glowing colours of their decorative glass plates and bowls.

In this seasonal exhibition inspired by the winter landscapes of the North York Moors, they will be showing a new series of works created in black and white.

Their current work is inspired by the visual experience of the landscape in which they live and work at their studio in rural Ryedale.

Kate said: “With winter snow, the landscape undergoes a huge change, becoming pared back and redefined by structure and lines, resembling a black and white drawing.

“Our new monochromatic work captures the essence of the North York Moors at this special time of year.”

With their contemporary approach to design, glassblower Stephen and designer Kate are breathing new life into a local tradition of glass making in Rosedale Abbey that stretches back to the 16th century.

The pair, who were recently showcased at the Royal Academy of Arts as Britain’s most Exceptional Craft Makers, are excited to be developing their first-ever monochromatic exhibition especially for the intimate space of The White Room Gallery, which resides in the basement of Priestleys in Botham.

Gillies Jones Bowl is collected worldwide, appearing in both public and private collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Museum of Modern Glass in Rodental, Germany, and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.

Winter’s Mark is supported by Ryedale Artworks, who have received funding from Ryedale District Council to programme a series of exhibitions as part of Creative Industries Commissioning.

The exhibition is at The White Room Gallery at Priestleys, 36 Bootham, York. It is open Mondays, from 11am to 5pm, and Tuesday to Saturday, from 10am to 5.30pm. Free entry.
